June 3, 2008 - The 4 photos below were taken the evening of Sunday June 1 during the incidents that occurred around Easton/Northlake/Bon Aire. They were taken by an alert and concerned neighbor as events unfolded, turned over to DPD to aid in their investigation and have been returned to the owner thanks to the efforts of our Security Director, Doug Woodham.

If you recognize any of the persons in the photos or have additional information about what occurred call DPD Northeast station at 214 670-4415 and say that you would like to speak with a detective about incident 162593-V

We post the latest crime statistics regularly, so you can stay aware of activities in our area.

If you would like to be emailed about emergency alerts, please email us at olhna-subscribe@yahoogroups.com to be added to our OLH Blog. We will hold all email addresses in confidence and not disclose to any parties.

The OLHNA Blog can be viewed at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OLHNA/.

Part of your Membership Dues go toward gas money for our Volunteers in Patrol (VIP) Program, volunteers in the neighborhood drive around and keep a watchful eye out for us. This saves us the expense of hiring off duty police officers.

Things you can do to help:

  • contact our Security Director to be a Volunteer in Patrol

NO SOLICITING

Download a bilingual a sign for your home

These print 2 per page. Give one to a neighbor.

Legal Basis : The Dallas City Code prohibits unwanted solicitation and advertising at your home if a sign such as this is conspicuously displayed. Ordinance 14300, Chapter 42, Sec. 42-21 addresses SOLICITORS and provides, in brief, that solicitors must leave the premises if the proper sign is in place. This reference further provides that solicitation is prohibited prior to 9:00 AM or after 30 minutes following sunset of any day, Monday through Saturday, and at any time on a Sunday, New Years Day, July 4 th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day whether or not a sign is displayed. The ordinance exempts a person holding a charitable solicitation permit while engaging in an authorized charitable solicitation. Ordinance 10371, Chapter 7A, Sec. 7A-13 provides that no person may throw, deposit, or distribute any commercial or noncommercial ADVERTISING on any private premises displaying this type of sign in a conspicuous manner.

Reporting Process : It is important to note that unless violations are reported, the signs will soon lose their impact.

For Unwanted Advertising : After the sign has been displayed for a reasonable length of time (say two weeks), any unauthorized advertising should be saved and the date noted. Go to the 311 website at "http:/311.dallascityhall.com/index.html" or call 311 and report the violation. Be sure to ask for a report number so you can follow-up on the report. The incident will be forwarded to Code Compliance in the City computer system. If the compliance officer needs the actual brochures, he/she will contact you.

For Unauthorized Solicitation : Do NOT open the door, but ask through the door what the individuals' business is and what company they represent. Be sure you let the unwanted person know you are home so they won't attempt a break-in. Direct their attention to the "No Solicitors" sign if you have it posted. If they leave without objection, you may report the violation with the date, time and name of the company to Code Enforcement as stated above. If the solicitor will not leave or is in any way threatening, call 911 immediately and report the incident. Again, be sure to ask for a report number from the 911 operator.

SECURITY ALERT

There have been numerous day time burgleries in the neighborhood lately. Please be on alert and call 911 immediately if you suspect an unusual person or activity.

The burglaries have occurred DURING THE DAY, as well as middle of the day on weekdays. The thieves are watching and waiting for the home owner to depart, then entering and taking computers and electronic equipment within minutes. Neighbors be vigilant. CALL 911. They often leave out of the front door, and park out in front, or in the alley.

The most recent tactics are...........it makes no difference whether you are home or not. Burglar walks up to front door and knocks. No answer (even if you are at home) so he or she returns in a few minutes and tries again. Still no response so they go to the back alley, jump over the fence, smash a window or door (unless you do happen to be at home and scare them off) they take what they want in a matter of a few seconds and leave by the front or the back, whichever is most accessible and will serve their purpose the best.

Action Steps for every homeowner:

Do not leave items in your car in plain site.

Know your neighbors, and call 911 immediately if you suspect an unusual person or activity.

VIPs Needed:

If you are interested in volunteering in the VIP (Volunteers in Patrol), please contact Doug Woodham. This involves some training, then driving around and keeping an eye out for unusual activity or persons. WE NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS, AND MUST STOP THIS CRIMINAL ACTIVITY. The VIP simply is a person to call 911- does not act on the scene.

** BMV.....Burglary of a Motor Vehicle
** UUMV.....Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle

Our VIP Patrollers continue to see open and unattended garage doors so we encourage you to be a bit more cautious. If our "good guys" see it, you can bet that the "bad guys" see it and that is an open invitation for them to help themselves to whatever they can get away with quickly.

Congratulations to all of you for being more observant than ever before. Lots of reports are coming in with a lot of valuable information on suspicious vehicles in our neighborhood AND you are calling 911 immediately and no longer hesitating. Vehicle descriptions and license numbers and well as driver descriptions have been a great help. Thanks for contributing to make our neighborhood a better and safer place to live in.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As your Security Director, I am responsible for soliciting, training, and coordinating all of our Crime Watch and VIP (Volunteers In Patrol) volunteers for Old Lake Highlands. This involves scheduling patrols, meetings, and general organizational and administrative details. I report the weekly crime stats which affect our area. I maintain a constant liaison between the community and the Dallas Police Department. Within the confines of Old Lake Highlands, we have residential, multi family (apartments) and businesses. It is my job to interface with each entity to make sure that crime issues are always followed up on and addressed properly. I am in constant communication with the officers at the Northeast Division from Deputy Chief Jan Easterling down to the beat patrol officers. I have continued meetings on a regular basis with these officers to make sure that community issues are being addressed. I also interact regularly with Councilman Kadane and serve as the district representative on several citizen protection organizations in the City.
If at any time I may be of any assistance to you, do not hesitate to contact me.
