A Midcentury Modern Dream Revived
This month’s featured home is a masterclass in blending retro charm with modern functionality. Originally built in 1962, this stunning split-level home underwent a massive transformation that left it radiant both in style and in the way it lives today.
Stellar Vibes & A Kidney-Shaped Pool
Back in January 2011 when Carolyn and Brett moved in, they were drawn to Old Lake Highlands for its unbeatable location and how close it is to White Rock Lake, restaurants and its active, sporty community vibe.
But the real clincher? This house had a split-level layout, a spacious yard, a kidney-shaped pool (yes, please!), and a rare Dallas unicorn, a basement!
Future Visions Blended with Modern Funk
While the home had incredible bones, the layout needed some updating. What started as a collection of four separate rooms on the main level was reimagined into an open-concept space perfect for hosting, cooking, and soaking up natural light.
This 3/4 remodel was no small feat. Taken down to the studs, they raised the ceiling to create a vaulted masterpiece and seamlessly blended Midcentury Modern funk with 21st-century comforts.
“We really wanted to stay true to the Midcentury Mod style of our home. Especially since we left the top floor and basement original, we wanted the remodeled portion of the house to feel cohesive with the other floors. Plus, we just really like the retro feel of MCM design. We felt like it suited us much more than making the remodeled portion too new or modern looking.
It had to be a balance of MCM funky design and modern living.” - Brett & Carolyn
The Process: Challenges, Choices & Triumphs
A five-month journey (and short rental stint in Lochwood) brought this home to life. Along the way, surprises popped up like needing an entire electrical overhaul, relocating major utilities and replacing the hot water heater and HVAC. But with Eric Cantu Homes as their general contractor and Statera Interiors guiding the design concept, every challenge was met with expert craftsmanship and creativity.
The Finished Product: Light, Life & Luxe Details
Now, the home is a showcase of 60’s modern beauty. The once-cramped galley kitchen has transformed into an entertainer’s paradise, where they love cooking with their son.
They also love the 12-foot sliding doors and gable windows that flood the space with natural light and provide a front row seat when wildlife shows off in their yard.
“Our house has been so much more energy efficient since we added spray foam inside all of the new walls, throughout the attic and to the crawl space.
But the real pièce de résistance? It's our terrazzo countertops and backsplash, a true 60s statement piece that was well worth the splurge.”

Tips for Fellow Remodelers
For those considering a similar renovation, these homeowners have some sage advice:
Start sooner than later…there’s no perfect time, so just dive in.
Budget 30% more than you think you’ll need (ouch, but true).
Short-term rentals in this area are scarce and pricey, so plan ahead!
Keep your original hardwoods if possible…the right floor expert can sometimes make them seamlessly blend with new additions.
Think smart…a remodel is the perfect time to add WiFi-enabled lighting and smart home features.
A Home That Shines
From its open, airy spaces to its thoughtful balance of old and new, it’s a testament to how thoughtful design can transform a house.
This home is more than just a renovation, it’s a love letter to the 60’s Midcentury Modern style and the vibrant, welcoming spirit of Old Lake Highlands.
“If this home had a personality? I think it would be radiant.
We love our showstopper Sputnik dining table light. We found it at a vintage store in Lewisville, and it's totally giving Barbarella!”
