August 2024 Home of the Month
534 PARKHURST DRIVE
My dog Stripes and I moved into our 1950s cottage in July 2020. You’ve probably seen us walking around OLH! Like many homes in our neighborhood, it was a 3 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom with approximately 1,200 square feet.
Recently, I decided to add a second full bathroom – a project that was both exciting and challenging given the smaller foot print of the home.
My goal was to do this addition without tearing down any exterior walls, while also ensuring that laundry remained inside since the garage is detached.
I designed the plan myself and collaborated with Prada Interiors, a company that truly brought my vision to life. The renovation revolved around a creative use of a very small space and took 3 weeks to complete.
Here’s what I did:
I converted the existing utility closet into the new full bathroom and repurposed the adjacent closet to accommodate a stackable laundry unit.
I replaced the traditional water heater with a tankless one, installing it in the attic, to create an en suite bathroom for the primary bedroom.
To enhance privacy and create a seamless flow, I sealed off the hallway entrance to the original bathroom.
I opted for white penny tile floors and subway tile showers in both bathrooms for a cohesive and classic look.
To further maximize space, I installed medicine cabinets and additional recessed cabinets, providing ample storage space without compromising on the aesthetic.
I’m so happy I took the leap. Not only did it add functionality to my home, but I was also able to preserve the character and charm of the 1950s cottage. I'm honored to have my efforts recognized and hope this inspires others in our wonderful neighborhood to explore creative solutions in their own homes.
